And so the first part of this book is dedicated to the learning of
design. We will make mistakes and we will learn how to correct
them, we will be angry and frustrated but finally we will reach our
goal—we will make a toy. When this happens, a feeling of joy and
pride in one's efforts will be achieved.
The second part is arranged to introduce ready-made patterns for
many toys to suit the age of the child and the skill of the worker.
We start with the easiest toys, the baby and pram toys, then come
the cuddly toys, and we end with designs applied to an older child
and a more advanced worker. Assembling patterns and sewing the
parts together is an exercise in logic and craft, whether using one's
own or other people's patterns. The artistic touches are in the
finishing. There are no two toys alike, because the character and
personality bestowed upon them is the "breath of life" instilled by
each individual worker. You will also be able to interchange the
patterns and make different designs, because, by the time you reach
the second part of this book, you will understand the basic rules of
pattern making and you will know how it all began.
Since play is the most important factor in the development of a
child and since toys are essential to play, it is hoped that this book
will encourage many people to take up this ancient craft, and that
the ideas and designs provided within these pages will benefit old
and young alike.
