The Danish designers of wooden playthings perfected the
art of
supplying the child with what it needs. Take, for instance,
their
most excellently made sets of large wooden cubes, the largest
measuring about 24-" x 24" with one side open,
so that the slightly
smaller ones can be fitted inside each other. This type
of toy is ideal
in its concept because it serves several functions. It is
educational;
it helps a child's understanding of shape as he fits the
cubes
together. At the same time it is good for play because of
the
variation of ideas which children can project into these
cubes. For
a boy, they can become an engine and rolling stock, a car,
or even
a bicycle. For a girl, they can be transformed into dolls'
cots,
tables with working tops upon which to knead pastry, or
they can
even make a snug "hiding" bed for a small child,
or a bench to sit
on during a meal.
