By understanding a child's mentality, either through direct
contact,
or by reading any of the many and excellent books on the
development of children, one can get a very good idea of
what is
suitable and what will be wanted. Often from the heights
of our
adult status, we try to project our own ideas and tastes
on the
young and if they reject them, we feel hurt. Yet we must
not
forget that a child's conception of a plaything differs
vastly from
ours. The toy is ultimately a gift for a child, its role
is to please the
young. What we find amusing, a child may not. He often shows
no
interest in what we regard as a "good design"
and what we think
will be good for a child may become an unwanted toy put
aside.
So, by learning about children, we can appreciate more fully
the
function of a toy.
