Materials and Tools

Toymaking is one of the most inexpensive crafts. In nearly every
home there are bits of various materials left over from dressmaking
or from some outgrown garments which could be used for a toy.
There is, however, one most important point to remember. These
bits of fabric must be arranged so that they will look gay and
attractive. A pair of old corduroy or flannel trousers can make a
hare, a rabbit or a teddy bear, but do add a brightly-coloured
waistcoat or a skirt to cover up the drabness of the body.
If you are a beginner in the art of toymaking there is no need to
spend money on new materials; look first at the bits and pieces you
can find at home. Of course, later on you can launch out and buy
special fabrics for a special toy, but even then, the pieces needed
are so small that it does not involve one in great expense. For some
patterns included in this book, the cost of materials does not exceed —and often is well under—a pound.
