With regard to the actual designing, I have to quote the
words of
my own teacher: "Designing is seeing". How right
he was. Most
people—and I would even go further and say all people—can
design if they will only train themselves to picture the
proportions
and the outlines of the toy they want to make. To learn
how to do
just this, you will be carefully guided through these pages,
starting
with the easiest type of toy, developing it further, to
end with a
sophisticated toy made to your own design.
The question of being able to draw simply does not come
into it!
This can be overcome by copying out shapes of various animals
from existing books. The "feel" for a good outline
will come with
experience, and the more toys one is able to make the more
accustomed one will become to the various characteristic
outlines
of animals—and in the case of dolls, of the human
body.
