MAKING THE ELEMENTARY PATTERN
To work out the patterns from the drawing in Diagram 6,
cut out
in paper two pieces of the side view which will be marked
body
pattern. These will be joined together by gussets. The width
of
the gussets on a small toy standing some 6" (15 cm)
high should
not be more than about If (3-5 cm) wide, but they should
be
widened down the legs by another f (0-5 cm) to end at the
feet,
measuring \}" (4 cm). This will make the toy, when
finished, stand
firmly on the ground. The length of the gussets is taken
from one
of the body pieces. Measure from the base of the front leg,
up the
front leg, continue up the front of the neck, round the
head,
following the back and ending at the base of the back leg
(Diagram
7, line A). This is called the outer body gusset. To give
depth to
the toy, in other words three dimensions, an under body
gusset
is required. This has to be the same width as the outer
body gusset
and also widened out at the base of the legs. The length
of the
under body gusset is taken from the body pattern by measuring
along the inner line of the front leg, along the body and
ending at
the inner back leg (Diagram 7, line B). Draw the worked-out
gussets on paper.
