To cheer up the doubtful and the frightened let me admit,
here and
now, that with my training and many years of practical experience
even I have difficulty in producing a perfectly good pattern
straight
from the drawing. In some cases it takes me as many as six
re-makes to get the overall line of the toy to satisfy me
and the
people who have commissioned the design.
But one must make a start somewhere, and even if the first
effort
is a disappointment, it is, at the same time, the first
lesson on the
way to improvement and to understanding the problems involved.
For your first experiment always use gay, colourful materials,
as
these will make the work much more amusing, and even if
the toy
does not come up to expectation, the charm of fabric and
trimmings will soften the blow.
