Making the Doll, tips and advice

Cut patterns into flesh coloured calico or infel remembering that the amount for turnings has already been calculated for in the pattern. Sew on the wrong side of the fabric.

The doll maker will start by machining the darts around the face and sew on the face, at the front neck, to the front body. Then machine the front arms the front feet to the front body, sewing these on a dart. Put work aside. Join the two halves of the back head and sew them at the neck to the back body. The doll maker will then machine the back arms and the back feet to the back body.

Pin the front body to the back body, starting at the centre of the face which corresponds to the centre of the back head. Working on one side of the body, continue pinning along the shoulder, the arm round the hand, then down the side of the body ending at the base of the foot. Machine along this line. Remove pins and machine from the bottom of the foot on the inside leg to the
crutch. Work in the same way on the other half of the body Insert the soles. Cut a slit about 6.5 cm down the centre of the back body and turn the work right side out through this slit as marked.

To continue doll making, into each foot insert a piece of cardboard, the shape of the sole but
slightly smaller, and proceed to stuff. This cardboard sole will make a flat base to the foot.

Two important things to watch out when stuffing a doll are- first the legs which have to be stuffed very hard with small amounts of cotton flock m order to make them strong and solid; and second,
the face which is shaped by stuffing the darts to achieve the moulding of the cheeks and chin.

To make the dolls fingers, stuff the hands lightly and then machine along the drawn lines as featured in Close the stuffing opening with a neat ladder stitch.
