Doll Maker
Making the Doll, Finishing Details
As a doll mkaer, it is important to realise
the positioning of eyes, nose and mouth. Always bearing in
mind that a doll represents a small child, the placing of
features is based on a child s face.
The Doll Makers rule is to divide the face equally both ways
and mark the horizontal line in four and the lower half of
the vertical line in two. Place the top of the eyes touching
the horizontal line and just below it, leaving a fine forehead
The mouth is pdaced immediately below the fourth part of the
face. One of the mistakes most frequently made is that the
eyes are put too high on the face and often too close together,
cutting into the forhead and missing the essence of the childs
expression.

The eyes can be made in felt, or by using
small buttons or glass eyes mounted on felt discs to add depth
to the face. It is important that the eyes when set into the
head are well pulled into the face, which will accentuate
the eye-sockets and consequently will bring the forehead well
forward.
Doll Makers work by inserting the needle in place at the base
of the head just above the back neck, and work from the opposite
side of the head to the eye. When the doll is completely stuffed,
one can improve on the features by using a strong darning
needle, and inserting it into the face scooping the stuffing
further into the cheeks and chin to underline their existence.
