  • Chair assembly: Attach cleats for the backs onto the side pieces, using 3/4" flat head screws and glue.
  • Secure seats in place with the pegs. Glue and screw the backs to the cleats, countersink screw heads and fill holes.
  • If desired, seats may be attached to the chair sides with cleats as is done with the back, thus eliminating the need of lugs and pegs.
  • Table assembly: Make four legs as shown using glue and finishing
    nails. Set nail heads and fill holes. Mitre the ends of the side rails and attach the legs with 3/4" flat head screws and glue.
  • Make sure the top of the rails is flat so that the table top will fit snugly.
  • Glue and nail the top to the nails using 1 3/4" or 2" finishing nails. Set nail heads and fill holes.
  • Sand lightly with fine sandpaper in direction of grain.
  • Apply a coat of white shellac and follow with two coats of flat varnish. Sand lightly between coats.
  • Wipe-off Finish: Brush on a coat of flat oil-base paint of desired color. While still wet, wipe off with a cloth to desired intensity of tone. When dry, apply coat of shellac. Sand when dry. Finish off with a coat of flat varnish.
