As well as growing out of their clothes very quickly, children put a lot of strain on them, especially at the elbows and knees. Patches in bright, contrasting material, cut in different shapes, will soon hide any tears or fading. Make patches in a double layer of fabric for extra strength. Fold under the raw edges and pin me patch onto the garment. Hand hem or zigzag machine stitch round the edges, as with applique (see page 18).
