21. Drill the W diameter holes Vs" deep in the
four pieces.
22. Get a friend to help you hold this together as you
assemble.
Squirt some glue in each hole.
Place the dowels in the holes in one length. Holding
it upright, squirt some
glue in the holes in the second length and put the second
length on top and work
the dowels into the upper holes.
23. Predrill the corners for screws and screw the corners
together.
24. Repeat steps 22 and 23 for the other doweled section.
25. Hinge the two sections together.
26. Clamp the lower section between the sides (see illustration,
p. 91), predrill
for the screws, and screw the doweled lower section
to the sides.
27. At the upper front corner of each side, measure
W down from top and W
in from the front edge and puncture the measured point
with an awl.
28. Clamp a 2" x 2" square of wood behind
and drill a W hole through the
corner of the side. (The clamped wood behind will prevent
the back surface from
splintering.)
29. Apply glue inside the hole and insert a ¥2 "-long,
^"-diameter dowel and let
dry.
30. Measure down from the front edge W and drill a very
thin hole through to
the dowel. Screw the screw eye of the hook and eye lock
into the hole. Do the
same for the other corner. (The dowel plugs give the
screw eyes something better
to crab onto than the glued plywood sections, which
might eventually separate
after long use of that hook and eye.)
31. Screw the hook into the top bar to complete the
lock. Hang the hook in the
screw eye and hold it across the top bar, so that the
hook's screw is pointed into
the bar. Puncture the bar a bit with the screw, remove
the hook from the screw
eye and screw the hook in.
"•Note! Be sure to use the type of hook with
a spring lock—it's not one a
child can open.
