Remainder of materials
12. From the 2" x 4" cut two lengths 52V8"
long and two lengths 24" long.
13. From the " dowels cut thirteen lengths 10"
long and thirteen lengths
22" long.
14. From the baluster cut four lengths 52Vs" long,
two lengths 9" long, and
two lengths 21V8" long.
15. Measure for the bolt holes on the 24" lengths
of 2" x 4" and drill holes using
" bit.
16. Corner-clamp the four corners of the base—the
2" x 4" sections—with the
short pieces between the long pieces. Nail the corners
together using 2V2" com-
mon nails.
17. Bolt the base onto the sides and back frame at the
highest level. Lay the
mattress board on top of the base . . . and you have
a desk (with air holes).
18. Make yourself a drilling template for the placement
of the dowel bars, where,
except for the end areas, there is a space of three
inches between every "
dowel. See the diagram, p. 89 for doing this.
19. Measure, using the template, for the dowel holes
on the four long pieces of
baluster. Use an awl to puncture a hole at the centered
spot for the drill bit.
20. Measure " in from the flat cutting edge of
the drill bit and put a piece of
masking tape on the bit to use as a guide to show you
when you've drilled in deep
enough. (See illustration, p. 89.)
